Wintering

An observation on the gentle beasts seeking warmth in Volusia County.

They gather in the seventy-two degree spring-run where the boil is clear, escaping the cold St. Johns.

Their backs are grey and scarred by blades, slow-moving islands of scarred flesh that rise to breathe the winter air.

We lean upon the timber deck and watch their quiet shadows drift like smooth, underwater stones.
