Melaleuca
An encounter with the invasive paperbark tree in a Broward County park.
Its bark is layers of white felt that peel away like sodden card, smelling of pungent camphor oil.
Brought from the southern hemisphere to drink the swamp and dry the dirt, it stands in gray, aggressive groves.
But here the mockingbird still sings from its pale, papery bough beneath the drone of the highway.
