The Royal Squawk of the Canopy

In Miami's greenest neighborhood, the resident birds polarize a community with their plumage and high-decibel screams.

Coconut Grove, with its lush, jungle-like canopy of banyan trees and wild bougainvillea, has long cultivated a reputation as Miami's bohemian refuge. But in recent years, the neighborhood's peace has been disrupted by a growing population of blue-and-green residents who pay no rent and make an extraordinary amount of noise. The peacocks of the Grove, descendants of birds imported by early settlers, have multiplied to the point where they are now a major point of civic debate. To some, the feral birds are a charming symbol of the area's wild character, while to others, they are loud, destructive pests that ruin car finishes and scream like frightened children at dawn.

The debate has polarized the local homeowners' association, where meetings often descend into shouting matches over avian management. On one side are the defenders, who feed the birds sunflower seeds and view them as natural ornaments of the historic streets. On the other side are the pragmatists, who point to the damage caused by the birds’ heavy claws on shingled roofs and their habit of admiring their own reflections in the shiny sides of parked luxury SUVs, often attacking the metal with their sharp beaks. The local commission has struggled to find a compromise, vetoing proposals for relocation after passionate protests from bird lovers.

Meanwhile, the peacocks continue their daily patrol of the avenues, moving with a slow, imperial stride that suggests they are well aware of their protected status. In the afternoon heat, a large male spreads his spectacular, iridescent tail feathers on the lawn of an estate, ignoring the passing hybrid vehicles and joggers. The scene is quintessential Grove: a mixture of wild tropical beauty and intense suburban exasperation, played out under the shaded boughs of the oaks. For the foreseeable future, the birds remain, their shrill, echoing cries a permanent soundtrack to the neighborhood's leafy, high-priced domesticity.
