July High

A lyric dealing with the intense humidity of the southern interior.

The humidity is ninety-eight percent and the air is thick as honey on the tongue of the sawgrass.

In the shade of the cypress dome the gator lies like a dark log, only his nostrils showing.

We sit on the shaded porch and listen to the distant boom of thunder over Big Cypress.
